Being Sherlock Holmes

sherlvckhomo:

Let’s talk about one of the most frustrating elements of BBC Sherlock: Johnlock miscommunication. From the first episode, John and Sherlock have been terrible at communicating when there are any emotions involved. In fact, John and Sherlock are so far from being on the same page regarding their feelings that they may as well be in different books. This meta will take a closer look at how John feels about Sherlock in comparison to how Sherlock thinks John feels about him.

We’ll start with Sherlock. We talk a lot about Sherlock’s low self-esteem and the idea that he believes his only good quality is his intelligence. That is to say that people don’t like him for his personality but instead only value his intelligence. However, when it comes to John, Sherlock believes that John values him solely for the aspect of danger that Sherlock brings to John’s life

Even on their first case, Sherlock notices (quite happily) that running after a potential murderer has allowed John to walk without his cane for the first time since his injury. In this moment, Sherlock sees that John thrives on dangerous situations and recognizes that John likely values him for his dangerous and exciting lifestyle

”You have missed this. Admit it. The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins, just the two of us against the rest of the world …”

During TEH, we see Sherlock desperate to gain John’s forgiveness and for John to accept Sherlock back into his life. We are shown during this scene that Sherlock believes appealing to John’s love of danger is the best way to get John to forgive him.

John, you are addicted to a certain lifestyle. You’re abnormally attracted to dangerous situations and people … “

During the confrontation at Baker Street during HLV, we see Sherlock tell John that he is attracted to danger and addicted to a dangerous lifestyle. This is extremely telling in that Sherlock knows that John is attracted to him in some way but remains confident that John’s attraction is because of the danger and adventure that Sherlock brings to his life.
